S.AF.E. (SHELTERS, ART, FAMILIES AND EDUCATION) is designed to engage homeless families (primarily women and their children under nine years old) who comprise more than 80% of the City’s homeless, in creative experiences that foster self-expression, literacy development and hope. In 2007-09, Making Books Sing worked with approximately 250 family members in five homeless shelters in New York City. Participants attended field trips, received free passes to a variety of cultural and recreational centers in NYC, and met weekly in sessions utilizing theatre, music and visual arts as vehicles in exploring quality literature.
